Frequently Asked Questions
General

I work with 7th-12th grade students and their parents, in Oak Park and River Forest, IL. I can also support Chicago-area students in-person or virtually.
I work with students of all backgrounds and identities, and am sensitive to the different challenges students face such as ADHD, learning struggles, and IEP or 504 accommodation needs.
-
I primarily offer in-person tutoring at families’ homes in the Oak Park and River Forest, IL area. I’m also available for online tutoring and academic support.
-
I provide individualized learning services to each student directly in their home (or online when needed). I believe in meeting students directly where they are and creating customized strategies for them, which requires a 1:1 session.
-
Math tutoring and academic or executive functioning coaching costs $100/hour and typically involves one, 60-minute session per week throughout the school year.
Pricing for parent coaching or parent consultation sessions is tailored to your individual needs, and typically requires 4 consecutive sessions. -
There will be two, free consultation sessions before we start working together.
The first 30-minute meeting is for the parents to discuss any needs or goals. The second 15-minute consult is for your student and I to get to know each other because their buy-in matters too!
Math Tutoring
-
I’m not just a tutor. I’m a former high school math teacher and trained leadership coach. I bring deep knowledge of math curriculum and school systems to my work, along with a coaching and systems-thinking perspective that helps students and parents better understand what they need to move forward together.
-
I offer middle school and high school math tutoring for Math 1, Math 2, Math 3, Geometry, Pre-Calc, and Algebra. I do not tutor Calculus.
-
Get your student professional math help early, before small gaps become bigger ones.
School-related conflict can easily arise when parents have to wear an additional hat as a teacher or tutor. As a third party, I can more easily assess your student’s current skills, identify and address missing gaps, and help rebuild their confidence while taking some of the academic pressure off the parent-child relationship.
-
Confidence is a muscle your student needs to practice. In our math tutoring sessions, I help students recognize what they already know, build on their strengths, and work through areas where they may have gaps.
As they develop stronger math skills, they begin to see themselves as capable learners. I also use positive reinforcement to help them recognize their own growth and build confidence in their math ability.
-
Getting a math tutor for your teenager is usually best when:
They’ve fallen behind on homework or test preparation
Their grades have been continuously declining
They have negative feelings or a lack of confidence around math
They’re struggling to understand new concepts because of gaps in foundational skills
They’re spending a lot of time on math, but still feeling confused or overwhelmed
They’re entering a more challenging math course and need additional support
-
Consistent weekly math tutoring can help your student strengthen foundational skills while keeping up with their current coursework. We’ll work on the concepts they’re struggling with so they can feel more prepared for homework, tests, and future lessons. I’ve helped students move from C’s and D’s to B’s and A’s by building both their skills and confidence in math.
Executive Functioning & Study Skills
-
Executive functioning skills are the skills students use to manage school and everyday responsibilities, including organization, planning, time management, prioritization, and getting started on tasks. A student can be academically capable and still struggle with these skills, especially as school becomes more demanding.
-
Executive functioning coaching helps students develop practical systems and strategies for managing school more independently. We might work on organization, planning ahead, breaking down assignments, managing deadlines, or figuring out what to do when they feel overwhelmed.
-
Your student may benefit from executive functioning coaching if they regularly forget assignments, lose materials, struggle to get started, miss deadlines, or feel overwhelmed by larger projects. They might understand the actual subject material, but need more support developing the skills that surround the actual learning process.
-
Good study skills are something students can learn and practice. I help students understand the mode of learning that works for them, along with what concepts they do or don’t understand. Then we develop strategies for test preparation and time management.
-
Organization needs to be realistic and personalized, especially for students with ADHD. I help students first identify where their current systems are breaking down. We then build simple, maintainable routines together for managing assignments, materials, and responsibilities.
-
Independence comes from gradually building the skills and confidence that allows them to take ownership of their learning.
I help students practice asking for help, communicating needs, and figuring out how to solve challenges, so they can become more confident advocates for themselves.
Parent Coaching & Parent Consultation Support
-
Parent coaching sessions are more reflective. Rather than giving you direct advice, I ask questions and use tools or frameworks to help you explore what’s happening, recognize patterns, and determine your next steps.
Parent consultation sessions are more advice-oriented. You bring me a specific challenge or question, and I use my experience as an educator and coach to help you understand the situation, navigate barriers, and determine practical next steps.
-
Try to separate your relationship with your teenager from their academic performance.
I can help you find ways to support their learning while creating more space for the parent-child relationship to come first.
-
The goal is to gradually shift responsibilities to your student as they develop the skills to manage school independently.
I help families create systems and routines that give students more ownership while giving parents visibility without needing to check every assignment, grade, or deadline. -
Start by getting curious about what is actually making school difficult for your student rather than making assumptions.
Together, we can identify whether your student needs math support, stronger learning or organizational skills, or a different type of system at home. -
It's normal to want to step in when you see your student struggling, but too much involvement can sometimes make it harder for them to develop independence.
I help parents think through when to provide support, when to step back, and when to ramp up their student’s academic tutoring or skills-based coaching. -
Self-advocacy starts with helping students understand what they need and giving them opportunities to communicate those needs themselves.
I can help students practice conversations and prepare for teacher office hour meetings.
-
Start by helping your student focus on the big picture rather than reacting to each assignment as it comes up.
I help students manage busy school schedules by looking ahead at their upcoming responsibilities. Then we break things into manageable steps so they can prioritize their time and reduce overwhelm.
